Mobicon wrap-up: Winners chosen in first Paranormal Writing Contest

The Mobile Writers Guild table at Mobicon, featuring books by several members.

The doors have closed on Mobicon XIV and the first annual Mobile Writers Guild Paranormal Writing Contest, held in conjunction with Ghost Hunters of the South. Attendees showed great enthusiasm for the contest, and we had the honor of receiving a number of excellent entries.

After narrowing them down, the GHOTS team read the finalists and a clear winner emerged: The Turning by Ronald Polizzi, a werewolf story that reminded more than one judge of “True Blood.”

From left: GHOTS Director Bryan Whatley; Mrs. Ronald Polizzi, whose husband penned the winning entry; and MWG President Carrie Cox.

Ronald’s wife explained that it has previously been published in a longer form. This helped explain why it was so polished and stood out from the others.

The winner of the young adult category was Erin Murphy, 12, whose story I Never Believed in Ghosts rivals any by Christopher Pike or R.L. Stine!

The winners each received a tote bag custom embroidered (by Tracy Whatley) featuring the logos of Mobicon, GHOTS and Mobile Writers Guild, in addition to an Advance Reader Copy of Wither by Lauren DeStefano and Robopocalypse by Daniel H. Wilson.

From left: Mrs. Ronald Polizzi, Carrie Cox, Charlene Moore and David Liang (contest entrants) and Bryan Whatley.

Our sincere thanks to Ghost Hunters of the South and everyone who entered.  We can’t wait to see what next year’s entrants have up their sleeves!
