May meeting recap: Meet the new officers

Paulette Davis-Horton, author of "Death in 60 Days: Who Silenced Booker T. Washington - A Nurse's View"

The final meeting of this season of the Mobile Writers Guild included an election, announcements of upcoming events, and a presentation by Paulette Davis-Horton on her research and personal reasons for writing Death in 60 Days: Who Silenced Booker T. Washington – A Nurse’s View.

Secretary Chris Cox conducted the business meeting, during which members voted to suspend the guild’s Open Mic Nights during the summer. There will, however, be three Drink N Scrawls throughout those months.

Chris also indicated he would be stepping down as coordinator of the Open Mic Nights, so anyone interested in assuming that responsibility should contact the guild.

As elected by members present at the meeting, here are the new officers:

President: Carrie Cox

Carrie Cox has been a member of the MWG for two years and has worked with several different members in critique groups during that time. A native of California, she has been living in Mobile for nearly fifteen years. Carrie is married with three children and has worked numerous years in leadership positions in her church. Her publishing credits include nonfiction pieces in two national magazines and one international magazine, though her passion lies with literature for middle grade through teen readers. You can follow her blog at www.wonderwegian.blogspot.com. She welcomes any feedback about MWG at the group’s Facebook page or [email protected].

Vice President: Stephanie Lawton

Originally from Ohio, Stephanie is the current Social Media Coordinator for the MWG, and has a BA and MA in English with concentrations in Professional Writing & Editing. She’s worked at several newspapers as a copy editor and paginator, she’s the Mobile Writing Examiner, and she helps run an education-based YA blog called www.novelnovice.com. She’s finishing up her first novel and can sneeze 18 times in a row. In her spare time, she’s a wife and mom of two.

Secretary: Dawn Steadham

Dawn Steadham, a proud Alabama native, has been a member of MWG for one year. She is an aspiring fiction writer currently making a living as a fitness instructor and freelance writer, although most of her background has been in accounting and software support. When not busy being a fantastic wife and mom to four wonderful offspring, she is also the Mobile Fitness Examiner and occasionally blogs at www.dawnspenandpaper.blogspot.com. She is looking forward to a great year serving MWG as its new secretary.

Treasurer: April Higgenbotham

April Higgenbotham is a new member to MWG and is an aspiring writer. Originally from Mobile, she joined the U. S. Coast Guard at 21 and has traveled the U. S. extensively, was stationed in Alaska and last year traveled to Tunisia in Northern Africa. She has a 20-year-old son who still lives at home. She is now retired and discovered a love for writing after several recent life-threatening illnesses. As an outlet, she began writing and has written over 40 poems in the last year. Her desire is to finish a book she started about her travels. She is very excited and feels honored to be a part of MWG.
