The Mobile Writers Guild usually hosts one major workshop per year, held in the spring. We now have enough details to announce this year’s offering!
The workshop will be Saturday March 3, and our guest speaker will be Lena Roy, author, teacher and granddaughter of Madeleine L’Engle, who wrote the classic, A Wrinkle in Time.
Here’s a brief bio:
Léna Roy was raised in New York City, in the cloistered environs of a theological seminary, with extracurricular education provided by Manhattan’s club scene. She worked as a bartender, an actor, and as a therapist with at-risk adolescents before finding her voice as a writer in Young Adult fiction. When
not writing and spending time with her family, she is teaching creative writing workshops for kids and teens from 8-18 with Writopia Lab in both NYC and Northern Westchester. EDGES is her first novel.
The first half of the day-long workshop will be “Mining Your Life for Fiction” and is aimed at adult writers:
All fiction comes from somewhere in the writer’s psyche. Madeleine L’Engle first sketched the Mrs Ws of A Wrinkle in Time during a journey through the Painted Desert of Arizona. Harry Potter came to JK Rowling while waiting for a train.
Open your mind to see characters wherever you are. This workshop will help you find a story through participating in writing exercises that explore character, setting and vibe.
The second half will focus on A Wrinkle in Time (which celebrates its 50th anniversary this February) and is appropriate for all ages.
We recently spoke with Ms. Roy and she’s looking forward to visiting Mobile: “I am excited to come to Mobile and do some of my favorite things: make new friends, talk books, people and ideas.”
