I hope 2012 is off to a great start for you and your writing goals. Mobile Writers Guild is hosting several noteworthy events in the months ahead with your creativity and information in mind. With spring in the air, be sure to enjoy the outdoors. The bounteous floral displays around town can be a good way to bring beauty and inspiration to the forefront of your life.

Upcoming Events:
Due to Mardi Gras parade schedules, our February Open Mic is canceled. You can still sign up to read for the March 15 Open Mic at Serda’s Coffee by e-mailing Dee Jordan at [email protected] We can host up to 10 readers, who each have 10 minutes to read their work. We had a great time at our new location in January and look forward to returning.
The next monthly meeting is Thursday, March 1 at 6 p.m. in the meeting room of the West Regional Library. We will begin taking nominations for MWG officers for the 2012-2013 year. Nominees must be current (paid) MWG members and they have the option to decline nomination.
Also, we are hosting Léna Roy, NY author of the novel edges. At this meeting, she will speak to us about her writing journey and her path to publication. Léna will have hardcover copies of edges for sale ($15) and she will be happy to personalize them for you. Read about her athttp://www.lenaroybooks.com/ and www.lenaroy.com.
The interactive workshop for A Wrinkle in Time to celebrate the book’s 50thanniversary and the annual Young Authors Roundtable is free and open to the community. (Léna Roy is Madeline L’Engle’s eldest granddaughter and she will have a limited amount of the anniversary hardcovers for sale. (See http://www.madeleinelengle.com/ for more info.) It will be held Saturday, March 3, from 9:30-11 a.m. and it’s perfect for ages 8-108.This event is co-sponsored by the Metro Mobile Reading Council, Mobile Public Library, First Community Bank and Mobile Writers Guild.
The “Mining Your Life for Your Fiction” workshopwith Léna Roy for professional/aspiring writers will be held from 1-4 p.m. on March 3. The price is $20 for MWG members and $25 for nonmembers. Léna is a professional workshop teacher and having her in Mobile is a fabulous opportunity. We’ve kept the registration price affordable to encourage the maximum amount of people to attend. For our April 5 meeting, we are hosting Alabama Poet Laureate Sue Walker in celebration of National Poetry Month.
Daddy’s Girl Weekend, sponsored by Carolyn Haines, will be held April 13-15 at the Malaga Inn in downtown Mobile. The weekend celebrates Haines’ characters from her Sarah Booth Delaney Mississippi Delta mysteries. Attending authors will include reigning Big Daddy, Dean James (writing as Miranda James, he is the author of the NYT bestselling “cat in the stacks” mysteries), fantasy author and Big Daddy candidate, Anton Stout. Paranormal, mystery, horror and romance writers Deborah LeBlanc, T.R. Pearson and a host of others. An agent and editor will also be there. The conference includes sessions on writing and publishing, but also readers’ sessions where those who love books can talk about their favorite characters and books. There will also be a contest for Big Daddy and a costume evening themed around the Bones’ character, Jitty. The contest is, What Would Jitty Wear? Any outfit from the 11 Bones books is fair game.
