From the President:
November already and we're getting our first taste of cold weather for the season. Some of you are participating in NaNoWriMo, and I wish you the best of luck as you work to complete your novel!
We have an exciting new opportunity for MWG Members, which I will detail below, but it does require a vote, so if you can be sure to read about it below and either attend the meeting, or send me your vote via email.
-Angela Trigg w/a Angela Quarles
2014-2015 MWG President
Upcoming Events/Opportunities:
Our next monthly meeting is this THURSDAY, November 6, in the first floor meeting room of the West Regional Library from 6-7:30pm. The presenter will be Mahala Church on Blogging: Yes - No - Maybe? Blogging is a major tool in a writer’s media kit, but what do I need to know to get started? Mahala Church gives writers and businesses the competitive edge. An editor, author, and instructor with extensive experience in healthcare management, writing, and editing, she is a strong patient advocate, and the owner of Written Word and Barefoot Writing Academy.
The Baldwin Writer's Group meeting is Saturday, November 15, 10:00 am at the Daphne Library. The guest speaker will be our own Laura Clark.
The next MWG Open Mic is Wednesday, November 19, at Serda’s Coffee on Royal Street. No pre-registration is required, but we suggest arriving between 5:30-5:50 to sign-up to read. We’ll do as many readings (ten minutes or less) as possible between 6-8pm. You do not need to be a member to read.
The Gulf Coast Writer's Association will be having a workshop on November 22, 9 am—Noon, Long Beach Library, 200 Jeff Davis Ave., long Beach, MS. Cost: $60.

Through the workshop, Oaks will show attendees how to compose a winning query letter, evaluate publishing opportunities, compose comprehensive book proposal including building a dynamic platform, formatting your manuscript, developing a press kit, marketing techniques, self-publishing – traditional publishing - print on demand, writing styles, sales history, genres that are generally accepted by publishers, what editors really look for when receiving your solicited material and much more.
Are you a writer? A poet? Sense wants to hear from you! Sense, a local magazine, welcomes short fiction, essays, humor and poetry submissions. Submit your edgy, eclectic work to [email protected] and it could be published in the next issue of Sense!
Special Member Opportunity/Vote
We have arranged with Urban Emporium in downtown Mobile the opportunity to sell member books! Here are the details, if approved by the membership: Members in good standing will be able to sell their books through the MWG at Urban Emporium, a retail shop on Dauphin Street in their Mobile Makers section. Urban Emporium will take 25% of the sale price, and 2.5% for credit card transactions. If the organization sells less than $100/month, the fee per month is $7.50. If we sell over $100, the fee is $15. They are open 6 days a week, plus during special events. This will be a stupendous opportunity to showcase members' books. To participate, if motion is carried, you must be a current member, and pay an additional fee, which we're proposing at the meeting to be $15/year. Urban Emporium will cut the check to the MWG and our treasurer will distribute funds quarterly (proposed). We can hash out these details at the meeting on Thursday and take a vote.
Since the next Art Walk is a week and a half away, and they'd need a couple of days to get us in their system, please attend the meeting Thursday if you are interested and bring up to five copies of your book(s) in case the motion is passed. I will also need an electronic copy of your author bio and photo--please send to [email protected].
