From the President:
It's that time of year for our organization--Officer elections! If you are interested in running for office, or would like to nominate someone, please consider doing so. You can email me: [email protected] or you can post your nomination in our private facebook group. If you are new, don't let that hold you back! The positions are: President, Vice President (in charge of programming), Secretary, and Treasurer. We will be holding our elections at tomorrow's meeting, so please make your voice heard!
-Angela Trigg w/a Angela Quarles
2014-2015 MWG President
Upcoming Events/Opportunities:
Our next monthly meeting is this THURSDAY, May 6, in the first floor meeting room of the West Regional Library from 6-7:30 pm. Published author Christopher Cox will be our guest speaker for May! Topic will be PERSPIRATION and INSPIRATION for fiction writers. PERSPIRATION - Do you ever read or at least look at books about writing? If so, do you have any personal favorites? I will be talking about some of the books the library has that can assist you in your own writing. Be ready to share your thoughts and ideas. INSPIRATION -Why fiction writing? What are your life experiences that inspire you to make up stories? Why do you want to make stuff up and put it on the page and maybe even let others see it? He’ll be looking for more audience participation. Christopher Cox is a librarian at the Mobile Public Library and has been a member of the Mobile Writer's Guild since 2005. He writes short stories, blogs and has completed a novel which he hopes will see print very soon. We look forward to seeing everyone at the meeting. Refreshments are potluck, so if you can, bring something for the group to nibble. NOTE: We are also holding officer elections, so please come out to show your support and make your voice heard. We still need officers to run, so long-time member, or brand-new, please consider running! This will look good on your bio, just sayin' :)
The next MWG Open Mic is Wednesday, May 20, at Serda’s Coffee on Royal Street. No pre-registration is required, but we suggest arriving between 5:30-5:50 to sign-up to read. We’ll do as many readings (ten minutes or less) as possible between 6-8pm. You do not need to be a member to read.
Special Member Opportunity
Our arrangement with the Urban Emporium in downtown Mobile is up and running! We've already had one author sell out!
Here are the details: Members in good standing will be able to sell their books through the MWG at Urban Emporium, a retail shop on Dauphin Street in their Mobile Makers section. Urban Emporium will take 25% of the sale price, and 2.5% for credit card transactions. If the organization sells less than $100/month, the fee MWG pays per month is $7.50. If we sell over $100, the fee is $15. They are open 6 days a week, plus during special events. This is a stupendous opportunity to showcase members' books.
To participate, you must be a current member, and pay an additional fee of $15/year. If you are interested, please bring up to five copies of your book(s) to the meeting and your checkbook. I will also need an electronic copy of your author bio and photo--please send to [email protected].
Member News:
Carrie Dalby Cox's second novel, Corroded (young adult, contemporary), will be released in April 2016 by Anaiah Press under the name Carrie Dalby. (Her first novel, Fortitude, comes out in January from the same publisher.)
