This is 2015-2016 Mobile Writers Guild President, Craig A. Price Jr.

I hope everyone is having a great summer. I just wanted to let all of you know that our second summer Drink ~N~ Scrawl will take place this Saturday July 25th from 2-4 PM at the Bluegill restaurant on the causeway.

Our formal meetings won't be back until September, but if you are available to come have lunch with us and talk about writing and help brainstorm ideas for things to do with Mobile Writers Guild this upcoming calendar year, we would love to see you!

We have some exciting news about a New York Times bestselling author that may be coming down this next year to the library. This next calender year starting in September we will be hosting raffles each month at $1 a ticket for donation to help make this happen. The winner of each raffle will receive a book on writing/marketing or a Data DVD of Audio Podcasts on Writing/Marketing, depending on what you buy a ticket for. So remember, starting in September to bring cash to our meetings! We have many other exciting plans to start this September and are excited to brainstorm new things with you!

Reminder:
If you have updates, please email us at mobilewritersguild@gmail .com and please put "NEWS UPDATE" in the subject line so I can easily find them. Thanks!

I look forward to seeing everybody at Bluegill this Saturday!

Topic will be PERSPIRATION and INSPIRATION for fiction writers. PERSPIRATION - Do you ever read or at least look at books about writing? If so, do you have any personal favorites? I will be talking about some of the books the library has that can assist you in your own writing. Be ready to share your thoughts and ideas. INSPIRATION -Why fiction writing? What are your life experiences that inspire you to make up stories? Why do you want to make stuff up and put it on the page and maybe even let others see it? He’ll be looking for more audience participation. Christopher Cox is a librarian at the Mobile Public Library and has been a member of the Mobile Writer's Guild since 2005. From the President:

We're now back to our regular monthly meeting time from here on out. Thank you for your patience! I hope everyone's been hard at work with their goals. If you're struggling, there are several approaches to take--are you setting unrealistic goals? Make sure your goals are things that are achievable by you in the time frame you've allotted. If it's dependent on outside factors, perhaps amend your goal to something you can control. Or break your goal down into smaller weekly, or even daily goals. Those can seem less overwhelming, and before you know it, by the end of the month, you've achieved your goal, or come close! Reach out to other writers and seek advice.

-Angela Trigg w/a Angela Quarles

Upcoming Events/Opportunities:

Our next monthly meeting is this THURSDAY, March 5, in the first floor meeting room of the West Regional Library from 6-7:30 pm. The presenter will be Joyce Scarbrough: A Flash-Editing Fiction  Workshop. Interested participants will need to email Joyce one page, 12 point font, double spaced with 1 inch margins, no name on the page. She'll edit the first six she receives via email at [email protected] so get yours in as soon as possible, there are, as of now, two slots left! We look forward to seeing everyone at the meeting. Refreshments are potluck, so if you can, bring something for the group to nibble.

The Gulf Coast Chapter of the Romance Writer's of America meeting is Saturday, March 7  11 am in the second floor meeting room at Carpe Diem on Old Shell Rd. Their speaker, via online, will be Laurie Schnebly Campbell on Psychology For Creating Characters -- And Their Fatal Flaws. Tools for determining naturally lovable (and intriguingly flawed) personality types include Adlerian birth order, Jungian thought/feeling scales, the Dewey priorities, and other theories of temperament including Enneagrams. Counselors and personnel managers use this personality tool to identify the nine personality types: Reformer, Nurturer, Achiever, Romantic, Observer, Guardian, Adventurer, Leader and Peacemaker. Each has distinctive traits, including a fatal flaw, that will naturally bring them into conflict with other people...AND with themselves. Learn from a counselor which types will offer the best opportunities for conflict between realistic characters whose "inborn" personalities will both oppose and attract.

The next MWG Open Mic is Wednesday, March 18, at Serda’s Coffee on Royal Street. No pre-registration is required, but we suggest arriving between 5:30-5:50 to sign-up to read. We’ll do as many readings (ten minutes or less) as possible between 6-8pm. You do not need to be a member to read.

Tallahassee Community College will be holding the first annual Word of the South Festival April 10-12, 2015, a festival of literature and music featuring a unique blend of writers and musicians with authors who write about music, musicians who are also authors, authors and musicians appearing together, and everything in between.  Confirmed musician/artists include Ann Patchett, the gospel group Sweet Honey in the Rock,  a joint appearance of the writer Mary Gaitskill with the musician Peg Simone, plus many more writers and musicians. Urban Emporium will cut the check to the MWG and our treasurer will distribute funds quarterly (proposed). We can hash out these details at the meeting on Thursday and take a vote.

Since the next Art Walk is a week and a half away, and they'd need a couple of days to get us in their system, please attend the meeting Thursday if you are interested and bring up to five copies of your book(s) in case the motion is passed. I will also need an electronic copy of your author bio and photo--please send to [email protected].

From the President:

Hopefully, everyone's been hard at work on their goals for this month! It's not too late to put in a creative spurt tonight and tomorrow to make your goal, you can do it! Good luck and see you tomorrow!

-Angela Trigg w/a Angela Quarles
2014-2015 MWG President

Upcoming Events/Opportunities:

Our next monthly meeting is this THURSDAY, October 2, in the first floor meeting room of the West Regional Library from 6-7:30pm. The presenter will be LeeAnn Ward on Storyboarding and Novel Plotting. Organize your book ideas through the techniques of storyboarding and character analysis. Whether you've already written a novel, or simply have a one sentence idea in your head, here's how to turn those ideas into a finished book through organizational plotting, character development, and scene-building. Get ready to plot that novel! Ms. Ward has had 6 novels published, is the former Senior Editor of Champagne Books, and has taught story boarding and novel plotting at conferences across the country. She's represented by Katie Reed at Andrea Hurst Literary Management.

Hook 'Em & Keep 'Em Author Event, Saturday, October 4th at 11 a.m. From T.A. Barron, the New York Times bestselling author of the Merlin Saga, comes a new fantasy world about the origins of Atlantis, perfect for fans of The Lord of the RingsEragonThe BeyondersPercy Jackson and the Olympians and, of course, T. New MWG Event! We will have a table to sell books at the LoDa Artwalk, Friday October 10. Open only to current MWG members. Joyce and I did it last month as a test and were pleased with the results. We will have a signup sheet at tomorrow's meeting and more details. Requirements: Bring your own books, handle your own sales, and be a member in good standing.

The next MWG Open Mic is Wednesday, October 15, at Serda’s Coffee on Royal Street. No pre-registration is required, but we suggest arriving between 5:30-5:50 to sign-up to read. We’ll do as many readings (ten minutes or less) as possible between 6-8pm. You do not need to be a member to read.

The Baldwin Writer's Group meeting is Saturday, Oct. 18, 10:00 am at the Daphne Library. The guest speaker will be our own Joyce Scarbrough and the topic will be: "Using Trends and Tropes Without Letting Them Use You"
